Be A Literacy Partner!

What is a Literacy Partner?

Literacy Partners is a partnership with our faith-based community, pairing students and volunteers together to practice reading and engage in conversations about the books being read. We began our Literacy Partners program in the Fall of 2014. It was a huge success with over ninety dedicated individuals volunteering their time to read with more than 160 students in grades kindergarten through third grade.

The purpose of the Literacy Partners initiative is to facilitate the goal that every child is reading on grade level by third grade. Literacy Partners serve with consistency and humility while keeping it simple.  The program includes two 15 minute one-on-one reading sessions right outside the classroom door.  Click on the following link to see the benefits of this worthwhile program:  Literacy Partners Video.

History of Literacy Partners

In 2008, an inter-faith ministries group in the greater Austin area committed to spend more of their efforts on decreasing the student dropout rate. After a great deal of research, the coalition identified one common root problem.  Children are four times more likely to drop out of school if they are not reading at grade level by the end of third grade.

Hill Country Bible Church Austin (HCBC) launched a partnership in the fall of 2010 with a local elementary school, utilizing church staff to read with students. Launching the program with twenty-four church staff and serving fifty-six students on one campus has grown to nearly 300 community and parent volunteers from twenty-three different faith based organizations serving close to 500 students on twenty-one campuses.
