Van Middle School is thrilled to announce Mrs. YaLonda Perkins as the 2024- 2025 Teacher of the Year for our campus!
As Mrs. Perkins prepares to retire after years of faithful service to Van ISD, it’s only fitting that we take this moment to celebrate a true legacy. For decades, Mrs. Perkins has shaped the minds and hearts of countless students, guiding them through fifth grade science with high expectations, encouragement, and care.
One colleague shared, “Her students have always been a huge priority in her life… She works tirelessly to help guide our fifth graders to where they need to be.” Another added, “She believes in excellence and doing a job right the first time.”
Mrs. Perkins has built a reputation as someone who not only teaches content but also instills confidence, accountability, and resilience in her students. A former student-turned-colleague said it best: “It’s bittersweet—she was my science teacher back in the day, and now I’ve had the honor of working alongside her. She absolutely deserves this recognition.”
Whether she was leading a packed classroom during the school year or going the extra mile during summer school, Mrs. Perkins always showed up ready to teach and inspire—and maybe crack a few jokes along the way. Her sense of humor, willingness to grow (even with new technology!), and passion for doing things the right way have left a lasting impact on Van Middle School.
On Monday, the Vandal drum line, cheerleaders, and administrators surprised Mrs. Perkins with a plaque, a yard sign, and a $1,000 check from the Van ISD Education Foundation.
We are incredibly thankful for Mrs. Perkins’ years of service and proud to have her represent VMS as our Teacher of the Year. What a perfect way to wrap up an extraordinary career!
