What started as a simple drawing activity turned into an unforgettable surprise for some of our youngest Vandals!

Earlier this month, kindergarten students across the district put their imaginations to work by designing their very own monsters using crayons, markers, and endless creativity. Each colorful creature was unique, full of personality, and—unbeknownst to the kinders—about to be transformed into something truly special.

Behind the scenes, 8th grade students got to work turning those monster designs into handmade felt creations. Over the course of several weeks, they carefully cut, sewed, stuffed, and stitched, doing their best to match every detail from the original artwork. From googly eyes and toothy grins to vibrant patterns and quirky shapes, each 3D monster was lovingly crafted to bring a kindergartener’s vision to life.

The project culminated in a surprise "Monster Delivery Day," when 8th graders personally delivered the felt monsters to their kindergarten creators. The courtyard at J.E. Rhodes was filled with excitement, smiles, and even a few happy gasps as students recognized their drawings come to life in plush form.

This creative collaboration was more than just a fun art project—it was a heartwarming way to build connections between our oldest and youngest students. The Monster Project encouraged creativity, kindness, and cross-campus camaraderie, leaving everyone involved with full hearts and fuzzy new friends.
