Today our Life Skills class traveled to Brownsboro ISD to participate in the 5th Annual Blue & Gold Games, a day of fun and friendly competition between students from Van, Brownsboro, Whitehouse, Bullard, and LaPoynor. It’s National Crocs Day, and we knew exactly where to find one of our favorite Croc-loving Vandals — Mrs. Malone’s kindergarten classroom at J.E. Rhodes Elementary! And, of course, she was sporting a favorite pair of Mickey Mouse Crocs while loving on her kindergarten kiddos. 🐭❤️
Mrs. Malone is a Vandal through and through! A second-generation Van graduate, she has also watched two of her own children graduate as Vandals. This is her 8th year teaching kindergarten at Van ISD, after spending five years serving our district as a substitute teacher.
When asked what she loves most about Van, her answer is easy: the traditions and the people. She truly can’t imagine teaching anywhere else. ❤️🤍
And the Crocs? Mrs. Malone loves them because they’re comfortable — but even better, they give you a chance to let a little of your personality shine!
But our favorite thing about Mrs. Malone isn’t her Croc collection. 😉 It’s the relationships she builds with her students long after they leave her classroom.
You’ll find her in the stands, at the gym, or out at the fields cheering on her current and former students at ALLLL the things! 🏈🏐⚾️🥎🏀📣 She loves showing up for her kids and celebrating the things that are important to them.

💃🎶 CELEBRATING HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH | PART 2: VAN HIGH SCHOOL ❤️
Sometimes the best way to learn about a culture is to experience it!
For Part 2 of our Hispanic Heritage Month series, we’re heading to Van High School, where students in Mrs. Maxfield’s Spanish II classes have been learning that Spanish is about so much more than vocabulary and grammar.
As part of their Latin American Dance Cultural Project, students worked in pairs to research a Latin American dance and dive into its history, country or region of origin, cultural significance, music, traditional clothing and movements. Their goal wasn’t simply to present facts, but to help their classmates understand how each dance developed and how it represents the culture, history and traditions of its people.
And then came our favorite part — they had to get the class MOVING! 💃🕺
Each group became the teacher, breaking down the basic movements of their dance, demonstrating the steps and then inviting their classmates to get up and try it themselves!
Because music and dance are such beautiful ways to connect with and experience a culture. ❤️
For Spanish II teacher Mrs. Maxfield, that connection is at the heart of what she hopes her students take away from her classroom. She shared:
“While I love teaching the Spanish language, my favorite part is sharing the culture behind it. One of my biggest goals as a Spanish teacher is to expose my students to a world beyond what they see and experience every day.”
Mrs. Maxfield is proud of her own Hispanic heritage and loves having the opportunity to share a piece of herself with her students. Through projects like this one, she hopes they discover just how rich and diverse Hispanic cultures are — from the music and dance to the food, traditions and history.
But maybe even more importantly, she hopes they learn that studying another language and culture gives us an opportunity to understand people, embrace differences and see the world through a different lens.
And when students have the opportunity to share their own cultures and experiences in return, the classroom becomes an even richer place to learn. ❤️
At Van ISD, we love seeing learning come to LIFE — and judging by these photos, Spanish II definitely had a little extra rhythm! 🎶💃🕺

🇲🇽❤️ CELEBRATING HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH | VAN MIDDLE SCHOOL
As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re taking a look across Van ISD at the people, stories, traditions, and cultures that make our Vandal family so special.
Today, we’re starting at Van Middle School with someone whose story has come full circle — paraprofessional Henry Cervantes.
Henry’s connection to Van ISD began long before he became an employee. He attended Van from Head Start through 3rd grade, and as a young student, he was part of our ESL program until 2nd grade. He still remembers going to the computer lab to work on Rosetta Stone — and even arguing with his teachers that he didn’t need ESL anymore! 😂
Those experiences have stayed with him and shaped the way he sees and serves students today.
Henry shared that when he sees the time, patience, encouragement, and extra support our teachers and staff give students, he sees the people who once did the same for him.
That’s what makes Henry’s story so special. The little boy who once received that extra support at Van ISD is now one of the people providing it. ❤️
Recently, Henry helped bring Hispanic Heritage Month to life at VMS by organizing a campus-wide luncheon. Everyone was invited to bring a dish to share, but Henry and our incredible custodial staff went ALL OUT, preparing authentic dishes and giving their VMS family an opportunity to gather around the table, experience Hispanic culture, and enjoy some REALLY good food! 🌮🫔
For Henry, the celebration was about more than food. It was about sharing a piece of his heritage with the school district that has been such an important part of his own story.
We are proud that Van ISD is a place where our students can grow up, find their place, and sometimes come right back home to pour into the next generation.
Thank you, Henry and our VMS custodial team, for sharing your culture, your food, and your hearts with us. ❤️

-After high school, CharLee plans to attend Boston University and study abroad in Europe, and hopes to become a criminal psychologist.
-CharLee says the best thing about VHS is ”homecoming. During homecoming, everyone comes together and gets ready for the game on Friday night.”

LEARNING, TASTING & MAKING A DIFFERENCE!
The Superintendent’s Student Advisory Committee enjoyed a fun and meaningful field trip on Tuesday to the annual Region 7 Food Service Show in Longview!
Our students sampled a variety of foods, explored new food options, and looked for items they might recommend for inclusion in Van ISD’s school lunch program. They also worked together to complete a survey sharing their thoughts and reflections throughout the day!
Of course, no field trip is complete without a sweet treat! The group wrapped up the day with a stop at Braum’s for ice cream!

The Superintendent’s Student Advisory Committee enjoyed a fun and meaningful field trip on Tuesday to the annual Region 7 Food Service Show in Longview!
Our students sampled a variety of foods, explored new food options, and looked for items they might recommend for inclusion in Van ISD’s school lunch program. They also worked together to complete a survey sharing their thoughts and reflections throughout the day!
Of course, no field trip is complete without a sweet treat! The group wrapped up the day with a stop at Braum’s for ice cream!

It’s time for another look at what our talented Van High School Graphic Design students have been creating!
This week, we’re featuring two projects that challenged students to combine creativity with their growing digital design skills:
🌎 Glass World — Students created imaginative worlds while exploring techniques to achieve the look and feel of glass.
🏙️ Vector Cities — Students put their design skills to work building detailed cityscapes using vector graphics.
Each week brings a new challenge, new skills, and another opportunity for our students to turn their ideas into something amazing. We love getting to share their creativity with Vandal Land!

Our VHS CTE students kicked off their first eSports event of the year with an awesome day of competition and career exploration at the 2026 Region 7 eSports Fall Tournament in Kilgore!
Students put their skills to the test in some fierce eSports competition while also discovering where their interests could take them beyond high school. They connected with college representatives to learn more about eSports and educational opportunities and stepped into real-world technology scenarios through ETex Communications’ immersive virtual reality experience! 🥽💻
