What a day for the Mighty Vandal Marching Band! ❤️🤍

🦎🐢🦘 CREATURE TEACHER COMES TO J.E. RHODES! 🐍❤️
Fundraising for our school came with a pretty WILD reward today! Students who participated in our recent fundraiser earned the opportunity to attend a special Creature Teacher program — and our animal guests did not disappoint!
Students met Blueberry the blue-tongued skink, Sassy the veiled chameleon, Rocky the mata mata turtle, Roxy the red-tailed boa, and for the grand finale and definite crowd favorite... 3-year-old Rookie the red kangaroo! 🦘❤️
Our students learned so much about each animal, and the experience became even more memorable for our top three sellers, who earned the special privilege of holding Rookie! What a reward! 🤩
We love when learning comes to life! Thank you to everyone who participated in and supported our fundraiser. Your support of J.E. Rhodes helped provide a morning filled with hands-on learning, lots of smiles, and memories our students won't soon forget! ❤️🤍

There was a little confusion at Van Middle School today…
Apparently, Superintendent Don Dunn was EVERYWHERE! 👀
In honor of Superintendent’s Day, VMS staff had a little fun celebrating Mr. Dunn by showing up dressed as the man himself — and suddenly, there were Don Dunn impersonators roaming the halls and making some pretty BIG decisions for Van ISD! 😂

🍕 And we’re pretty sure a few other “district policies” were being rewritten before the REAL Mr. Dunn could intervene!

Good News Phone Call of the Week!
This week, we are celebrating Clara! Clara joined our J.E. Rhodes family this year, and we are so glad she did!
Clara works hard in the classroom, gets along well with her classmates, and consistently shows kindness, respect, and a commitment to doing the right thing. She is a wonderful example of what it means to show her Vandal pride!
We are so proud of the positive impact Clara has already made on our school family. Thank you, Clara, for being such a sweet addition to J.E. Rhodes Elementary!

In the best of times and on the hardest days, our fearless leader shines.
For 30 years, Don Dunn has been in the Vandal Kid business. And if you know Mr. Dunn, you know that isn’t just a job description — it’s who he is.
It looks like opening car doors in the morning.
Calling our kids by name.
Writing handwritten notes.
Showing up in classrooms, gyms, cafeterias and hallways.
Holding leaders accountable while bringing out the best in the people around him.
Looking for solutions instead of excuses.
And when there is a need — simply stepping up and filling it.
Years ago, a Little Dribblers team found itself without a coach. The search for a volunteer had come up empty. Those boys needed someone, and Mr. Dunn and Shelby Davidson stepped forward. Neither had a child on the team. Their own children were grown. There was nothing in it for them except the opportunity to make sure a group of kids had someone in their corner.
That story says so much about the man we are fortunate to call our superintendent.
Interestingly enough, education wasn’t Mr. Dunn’s original plan. His father was a high school teacher and coach who encouraged him to pursue a career that might provide more financially. Mr. Dunn attended Tarleton State University on a basketball scholarship before earning a degree in Industrial Business from UT Tyler.
He was actually driving to Beaumont to begin his first job with Farm Bureau Insurance when he realized he was headed toward a career that wasn’t meant for him.
So he turned around.
He returned to UT Tyler, earned his education credentials and became what he was meant to be — a coach and a math teacher. He later earned his master’s degree and moved into school leadership.
And for three decades, Van ISD students have benefited from that decision. ❤️
Through the years, Mr. Dunn has encouraged our students to do three things:
❤️ Dream BIG.
🤍 Work HARD.
❤️ Expect to go to college.
But perhaps his greatest lesson has been the example he sets every day:
Show up. Know their names. Expect their best. Love kids. Solve problems. And when there’s a need, step up.
Mr. Dunn, thank you for 30 years of choosing kids. Thank you for leading from the front, for believing in the people around you and for reminding us that the little things are often the BIG things.

-Lucy is a Senior at VHS and the daughter of Rusty and Angela York.
-Lucy says her favorite teacher is Mrs. Reed, “because she’s so helpful with anything I need, and she’s so nice. She makes her classroom very homey, and it’s an amazing work environment.”
-After high school, Lucy wants to attend The University of North Texas. Lucy says, “I hope to work in women's sports, specifically the WNBA, as a sports broadcaster. I feel like women's sports need more coverage, and I want to make a change."
-Lucy says the best thing about VHS is “the traditions we do. My favorite traditions are the pep rallies, the fatty, and the homecoming parade and bonfire. It makes everyone come together as a community, and it’s really fun.”
-What Lucy's teachers say about her:
“Lucy has volunteered her time to announce the players and coaches at our volleyball games and has done an outstanding job! Her willingness to step up, represent our school, and contribute to our school community speaks volumes about her character. Lucy has a bright future ahead of her, and we are proud to recognize her as Vandal of the Week!"

We will have our parent meetings for the upcoming boys basketball seasons starting next week
The JH Meeting will start at 6:30 pm in the junior highl cafeteria on Tuesday 10/20. The HS meeting will be the following Tuesday 10/27 at 6:30 pm in the high school cafeteria.
Anybody wanting to attend tryouts NEEDS to be at this meeting with a parent, as well will cover important information regarding the season.

What a special night in Vandal Land! Our Lady Vandals celebrated Senior Night with a THREE-SET SWEEP over Athens! 🧹🔥
Tonight was about so much more than volleyball. We had the privilege of celebrating Keely, Braylynn, McKenzi, Jordan, and Grace, along with Lanna and Lucy, and recognizing the time, dedication, friendships, and memories they have poured into our program. ❤️🤍
Senior Night is always bittersweet. We are incredibly proud of these girls and so thankful for the years we've had them representing Vandal Volleyball. What a way to celebrate their final home match — together and with a WIN! 🏐❤️
A huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped make tonight extra special for our seniors and their families. From all the behind-the-scenes preparation to everyone who filled the stands and cheered them on, we are so grateful for the love and support surrounding our program.
